Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Dr. Stephen Bruehl is a Professor of Anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. He has conducted chronic pain research funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health for more than 20 years. Much of his work has employed quantitative sensory testing (QST) in the context of placebo-controlled opioid blockade to study endogenous opioid mechanisms as they relate to pain-relevant phenotypes and opioid analgesic responses (precision medicine-focused). His work has also sought to enhance understanding of mechanisms of non-pharmacological pain interventions, alterations in endogenous pain modulatory systems associated with chronic pain, chronic pain and hypertension risk, mechanisms of post-surgical chronic pain, and oxidative stress effects on pain.
